Strangers No Longer recognizes that mental and physical health may be aggravated by lived experiences related to migration, immigration, and/or human trafficking, particularly in families and individuals who are not fluent in English. In response, Strangers No Longer is developing a health education and outreach strategy for non-English speaking, rural immigrant communities across northern and central Michigan.
Acknowledging both the shortage and the critical need for bilingual community health workers in these regions, Strangers No Longer launched its rural immigrant health promotion initiative last year, successfully recruiting and providing full scholarships to 8 bilingual community members interested in becoming Certified Community Health Workers.
Our purpose with this initiative is to create a community of certified “promotor/e/a/s de salud” who will serve as bridges between non-English speakers and community health providers. The ultimate goal is to improve access to mental and physical health care that is both culturally and linguistically appropriate for rural immigrant communities.
If you are bilingual, living or working in a rural area in Michigan, and are interested in becoming a promotor de salud, please consider applying to Strangers No Longer’s Bilingual Community Health Worker Scholarship.
